Introduction:
Hong Kong Trail Section Five begins at the junction of Wong Nai Chung Gap Road and Tai Tam Reservoir Road. Follow the vehicular road uphill. Half way up the slope you find Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park, the first water park in Hong Kong. There are boats and water cycles for hire. At the top of the road, you will find signs just opposite Parkview for both Wilson Trail and Hong Kong Trail. Pass No. 1 Barbecue Area of Tai Tam, the trail leads deep into the forest.

Hiking along the dirt path, you soon arrive at the 433 m summit of Jardine's Lookout. This central high point of Hong Kong Island presents a 180-degree panorama of Victoria Harbour. Your gaze extends from Central to Causeway Bay and Fortress Hill.

After enjoying the city skyline, get ready for an arduous descent via a dirt path and some steps. Down at the pass, the trail trends up again, climbing some 100 metres up the steps by the quarry. Extending east, Hong Kong Trail heads for the 436 m Mount Butler. The summit of Mount Butler sits at the end of a bamboo-lined path. There is a lookout with sweeping vistas. With the help of a sightseeing map, you can identify Tai Tam Bay and Stanley in the east, Tai Tam Reservoir as well as Lamma Island and the southern coastal region.

Follow the direction sign for Boa Vista. A flight of 599 vertiginous steps will take you down to Quarry Gap, where is the end of Hong Kong Trail Section Five. This large open space has many countryside facilities: a picnic and barbecue area, a rain shelter, toilets and a children's playground. More than a century ago, a small hospital built by the Taikoo Sugar Factory stood here. This undulating route is quite challenging, and for most of the way you hike along dirt paths with little shade. It is a route for experienced hikers and everyone should make sure they set off well prepared.
