Ma On Shan Ngong Ping is a popular spot for camping, hiking, and sunrise watching. This vast grassy plateau faces Pyramid Hill, which looks like a pyramid, and there is a viewing point on the slope that overlooks Sai Kung Town and commands wide open vistas of the coves and islands of Inner Port Shelter. The views extend to as far as West Dam of High Island Reservoir, Sharp Island, and Kau Sai Chau. When the sun breaks through from the clouds at sunrise, the islands reveal themselves like the different tones and shades of an ink wash painting while the fishing boats sail into the sparkling sea and the small town at the foot of the mountain comes to life – Sai Kung is such impressive at dawn. In late autumn, Ngong Ping Plateau is carpeted with golden silvergrass, reminiscent of the field of golden wheats that the prince in the famous novel “The Little Prince” saw.
